30ª Conferência Internacional da Sociedade Europeia dos Cetáceos
Centro de Congressos da Madeira
14-03-2016
Ambiente, Recursos Naturais e Alterações Climáticas
Mr. President of the European Cetacean Society;
Mr. President of Machico City Hall;
Mr. Chairman of the Conference;
Dear Sirs and Madams,
On behalf of the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Mr. Miguel Albuquerque, I welcome you to Madeira Island and wish you great success during this 30th International Conference of the European Cetacean Society - and hope you have a pleasant stay on the Island.
The government of Madeira is fully engaged in promoting sustainable Blue Growth, as well as protecting the Islands Natural Heritage, including both its biodiversity and geodiversity.
It is common knowledge that in oceanic islands the evolution of plants and animals with peculiar characteristics is enhanced due to the geographic isolation, harbouring a large number of unique and endemic species.
The Madeira and Selvagens archipelagos are considered biodiversity hotspots, as a result of their location (in relation to the African, European and American continents), their geological origin and climatic history.
It is a huge challenge to integrate in a coherent and articulated policy, such diverse themes as land and jurisdiction, accessibility and safety, tourism and sport, research and innovation, protection of our resources, including the deep sea.
We are therefore committed to the development of sustainable activities that enhance the heritage that is particular Madeira, with the study and observation of cetaceans a priority.
It is important to ensure a good conservation status of cetaceans in Madeira waters. One of the most important aspects is the study of the relevant parameters of the target species, together with the implementation of a management plan that addresses conservation issues with specific measures and to research the impact of human activities.
We are committed to our nature conservation history and also to the European directives such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in which cetaceans and their monitoring is outlined.
The Government of Madeira is decisively engaged in promoting sustainable Blue Growth, considering biodiversity and its conservation as priorities. The protection of these values will work alongside educational, recreational and socio-economic activities, such as fishing and tourism including whale-watching activities. We will work to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Madeira´s rich natural heritage.
Thank you and best wishes.
